the first Wingmaran you can build at home
The wingmaran 15 incorporates all the desired changes that I wanted to make after building and testing a 14’ long test boat named “FlyBy”. The wingmaran 15 is a foot longer and an inch wider. The wings are connected to the hull with piano hinges and held in the horizontal, deployed position with an 8mm stainless steel clevis pin. During trailering and storage in a garage, both wings can be folded upward. If you are sailing and need to pull up to a dock, 1 wing may be lifted upwards and tied off vertically. The wing is a good 6-7” above the waterline and produces no drag in low wind sailing conditions and with the hiking benches, the boat is easy to balance by shifting crew weight. When the wind picks up, the boat will heel onto the leeward wingtip, which generates dynamic lift according to boat speed. The lift from the wingtip grows exponentially. So at around 8 knots the wing supports 80 Kg and at 11.3 knots the leeward wing provides 160 Kg of vertical lift. I have done calculations and have proven that the lift generated by the wing grows faster than the heeling and pitching forces of the sail, so, unlike a trimaran which relies on a long and skinny pontoon, float or ama, which gets increasingly pushed deeper into the water as the windspeed increases, the hydroplaning wing of a wingmaran remains skimming on the surface of the water at all times, which causes the main hull to lift as well. The combined wetted area of the leeward wing tip and the skimming hull will be less than a similar length trimaran, so the wingmaran is a faster sailing craft. The wingmaran’s speed limit is more like that of a trimaran with lifting foils, however, the wingmaran 15 will be a lot easier to make and it will cost much less than a trimaran with lifting foils.
